Most waterline buildup is calcium scale: evaporation leaves minerals on the tile at the water surface and, over seasons, they harden into a white, rough crust. Sunscreen and body oils add a gray film, and algae or metal stains leave green, brown or rust-colored marks. Each type responds to a different method, which is why an inspection comes before any cleaning.
Light scale and film come off with calcium removal. Thicker, long-neglected scale needs a different approach. We pick the method after inspecting the tile, never by default.
Scrubbing and store-bought acids can remove light scale. They can also etch stone, dull glass and weaken grout, and thick scale usually returns because the surface was left rough. If you are unsure what your tile is made of, an inspection is free.
